Epiphany – The Dream

It’s January 6th, the day of Epiphany.

It’s cold and rainy tonight. Freezing rain.

Freezing rain stops us. In our tracks.

It’s dangerous to navigate the outside world in an ice-storm.

Today, as I was reading the story of the Magi visiting Jesus (Matthew 2:1–12), what stopped me cold was the dream.

The warning given by God to the Magi.

After the gifts were offered and the child was worshiped,
God spoke again.
Not to priests or prophets,
but to Magi.

Outsiders.
Men who did not yet know God by name.

In a dream, they were warned not to return to Herod.
And they listened.

God entrusted them with a quiet obedience that protected a child
and altered their path.

They went home another way.

Epiphany reminds us that God’s light reaches farther than we expect,
and God’s voice speaks in ways we may not anticipate.

Sometimes revelation comes before belief,
and obedience before understanding.

The world was changed because a few travelers
paid attention to a dream.

And I wonder, on this day of revealing,
where God might still be speaking,
and whether I am listening.

What dangers might I avoid
if I stop,
listen,
and trust the quiet warning
before I step onto the ice?
