Free falling

Trust is a free falling into grace. Of acknowledgement – I can’t – God can. It is surrender. Of unclenching tight fisted hands, opening up, letting go.

It is the Serenity Prayer:

God grant me the serenity
to accept the things I cannot change;
courage to change the things I can;
and wisdom to know the difference.

Living one day at a time;
enjoying one moment at a time
accepting hardships as the pathway to peace;
taking, as He did, this sinful world
as it is, not as I would have it;
trusting that He will make all things right

I surrender to His Will;
that I may be reasonably happy in this life
and supremely happy with Him
forever in the next.
Amen.

But, what is trust? The dictionary says it is:

noun

firm belief in the reliability, truth, ability, or strength of someone or something.

Trust

If I break it down, piecemeal, word by word – reliable, true, able, strong – hook those very words to God; the question is –  do I trust Him?

Oh, but what if I can’t? What if the situation feels too precarious, fraught with anguish? Can I change it, control it, steer the outcome, force it somehow on the road I think it needs to go? What if I let go and it goes sideways?

What if?

Can I live with the suspense of not knowing? Let go of the need for certainty. The inexorable drive for answers. The top spun, and it’s careening wild, spinning round and round.

Add an hour?

Jesus said,
Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?

Matthew 6:27

I stop, breathe deep. In and out. In and out. These mental gymnastics, this fretting, has it been effective? This terrible price, this loss of peace, where has it gotten me?

The whisper of His Spirit woos me.

Be still and know that I am God. Psalm 46:10
But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore, do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own. Matthew 6:33- 34
And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may be with you forever. John 14:16
Peace, I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid. John 14:27
My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” 2 Cor. 12:9

Grace

Breathe in, strength and comfort. Breathe out, worry and fear.

Trust.

Trust the Alpha and Omega. The One who knows the end from the beginning, and who promises to be with me always, in this, the in-between. Practice moment to moment surrender – as many times as it takes. Let go. Again.

Trust.

I lean now – free fall into grace.
